Terri’s Tutors
Help facilitate academic progress for young cancer survivors.
Terri’s Tutors provides educational support to young cancer survivors who are experiencing learning problems.
Central nervous system treatments for cancer can lead to significant cognitive impairments and learning issues in young children. Churchill created Terri’s Tutors to fulfill the dream of former teacher Terri Thornton, a cancer survivor who dreamed of combining insights from this experience with her teaching expertise.
Terri’s Tutors uses the same knowledge and techniques developed for learning-disabled students to facilitate academic progress for young cancer survivors. We offer individual tutoring, and upon the family’s request, we can also serve as the student’s advocate and conference with homeschool personnel. Tutors are past and present Churchill faculty, as well as other certified teachers who have completed the Terri’s Tutors training program and are supervised by Churchill faculty.
Services are available at no cost and are provided at Churchill Center & School or an agreed-upon public location.
Volunteer with Terri’s Tutors
Tutors are past and present Churchill faculty, as well as other certified teachers who have completed the Terri’s Tutors training program and are supervised by Churchill faculty.
Terri’s Tutors is always looking for new volunteers. To qualify, you must:
- Complete the Terri’s Tutors Application
- Be a certified teacher
- Participate in a two-hour training session
- Commit to one tutoring session per week for one semester
Throughout the program, tutors will:
- Collaborate with Churchill’s Sandra K. Gilligan School Partnerships & Outreach Program Director to ensure the child has the appropriate programming and materials
- Conduct tutoring sessions at Churchill Center & School, unless otherwise approved by the Sandra K. Gilligan School Partnerships & Outreach Program Director (for insurance and liability purposes)
- Report number of tutoring hours to Churchill’s Terri’s Tutor Coordinator at the end of each month
