Markey is a Churchill alumna who graduated with a bachelor of arts from Furman University and a master of business administration from Washington University in St. Louis. She is the founder, president and director of The Women’s Bakery (TWB), which is a business model committed to creating economic opportunities for women by training them to build, operate, manage and sustain their own bakeries which sell affordable, locally sourced, highly nutritious breads.

Markey was presented with the 2023-2024 Sandra K. Gilligan “Making a Difference” Alumni Award. Markey’s simple, yet so impactful personal and professional mantra is “We can, therefore we must.”
